Civic Branding / Visual Identity

In the eastern embrace of Nebraska lies Lincoln, a sleepy town lulled into dreams of greatness. However, greatness hinges on visibility, and Lincoln's flag would do it no favors in this regard having long since faded into the background of collective memory, thereby risking Lincoln's own descent into obscurity.

In a bid to overcome indifference and inject new energy into the City, the American Marketing Association and Young Professionals Group joined together with a contest to fly a newly designed flag over Lincoln.

Amid a storm of entries, my submission stood out as a top contender. Though it fell short in the end, I'll always be grateful for the backing it received from the people of Lincoln.

Like an owl among birds, Lincoln's reputation stands tall, demanding a flag and symbol that truly capture the indomitable, champion spirit of its people. That said, what could better embody the legacy of Lincoln than a bold, new emblem befitting the history and wisdom of a city full of the boundless potential to take flight into the future?

The Symbolism of the Field

The white background symbolizes the boundless opportunities awaiting Lincoln at every sunrise. The blue horizon embodies the fertile grounds and abundance that our city thrives upon.

  • Draped in brilliant alabaster white atop a steadfast denim blue

  • Loosely inspired by the colors of the Nebraska state flag, blending heritage with modernity

  • The sharp contrast between colors ensures that our flag commands attention from afar

The Symbolism of the Emblem

Revered for his humble roots, fierce mind, quiet poise, and dogged spirit, Abraham Lincoln is namesake to the city of Lincoln, despite his never having been to Nebraska. Still, there exists an unassuming, yet humble and fierce creature that reflects the virtuous spirit of Abraham Lincoln – the versatile Barn Owl.

This remarkable raptor thrives in the rawness of nature just as easily as it does within man-made environments. Is it any wonder, then, that such a shape-shifting spirit animal would echo the character of Lincoln?

Much like Abraham Lincoln’s humble origins, the Barn Owl takes flight from the humblest of aeries. And in the same way he defied all expectations to reach the White House, this phenomenal fowl soars with effortless ambition. A fitting symbol for a city that has undergone its own inspirational metamorphosis, there could hardly be.

Lincoln, Nebraska itself was once a sleepy village, nestled unassumingly amidst the endless prairie. And yet, much like the Barn Owl's ability to transcend environments, this plucky township burst forth to become a beautiful, vibrant capital city worthy of a state's pride. A true embodiment of adaptability and resilience on a civic scale.

Moreover, the Barn Owl serves as a quintessential emblem of Lincoln owing to the following:

  • The Barn Owl's heart-shaped face grants it acute listening abilities, much like Lincoln, a community that thrives on compassion and understanding through attentive listening. Examples include the University and Unicameral, epitomes of Lincoln's penchant for listening and learning.

  • The owl's dual gleaming eyes nod to its identity as the "Star City," while also signifying the twin beacons that have long steered its course: the historic Nebraska State Capitol and the prestigious University of Nebraska system.

  • At the top of its class, the Barn Owl boasts unrivaled physical prowess. Similarly, Lincoln flexes its athletic muscles through the gridiron glory of Memorial Stadium, the grueling test of endurance at the Lincoln Marathon, and the spirited competition of the Cornhusker State Games.

  • The diligent mastery of the Barn Owl reflects the fertile breeding ground of Lincoln, where ideas are nurtured and cultivated, leaving an indelible mark on history.

  • Just as the owl was synonymous with wisdom in Ancient Athens, Lincoln proudly carries on the tradition as the "Athens of the plains," reflecting its dedication to democracy and education.

For these reasons, the sage-like barn owl serves as a potent metaphor for Lincoln and its people. And if you need more reason, would it help to know that his name is Owlbraham? A cheeky homage to the former President and city namesake. With Owlbraham leading the way, Lincolnites can stride confidently into tomorrow.
